Assistance for the underprivileged to stand on their own feet

HRO strongly believes in helping people become financially independent and self sufficient, instead of providing them perpetual assistance.

There is an important distinction between simply providing relief as opposed to making someone self sufficient. Relief is generally a short term solution to a long term problem. Self sufficiency through economic and social change is a long-term solution, which is why HRO focuses on projects that promote self-employment.

Examples of projects that promote self-employment include:

• Providing sewing machines to widows and poor women for in-home tailoring business

• Assistance for setting up retail shops

• Financing of poultry and other farming

• Soft loans or aid to farmers for better quality seeds/pesticides/fertilizers who can not afford to buy and plough

• Providing push-carts for selling vegetables or other items for street vending

• Providing tools and equipment for professions such as woodworking, masonry, etc.

• Self employment projects such as the ones mentioned above, besides being permanent solutions, also contribute to the confidence, integrity and dignity of those engaged in these programs.
